ADVENT: 16 DAYS
Samuel
1 Samuel 16:7
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Samuel was born to Hannah and he was an answer to her prayers!
Hannah had Samuel live in the Temple with the High Priest Eli. Samuel became a priest, a prophet, and a judge for Israel. He served God in all these jobs.
Later on, Samuel anointed a boy to be King. Samuel anointed - which means he poured olive oil from a ram’s horn over David as God asked him to. The prophet Samuel anointed David to be King of Israel, & years later the prophecy became true!

Videos
Based on 1 Samuel 3 The story of Samuel and the High Priest Eli and Samuel hearing from God. Video Length 2:33
1 Samuel 7 Video Length 2:30
Before there is a King over Israel - God is their King. Samuel is Israel’s Judge, Prophet, and Priest.
This event in the video below occurs when Samuel takes on the job of a judge and asks everyone to repent & obey the LORD. While they commit to doing this through a ceremony in Mizpah, they come under attack by the Philistine army & through Samuel God gives them victory.
A clip from the movie- David and Bathsheba 1951 - Video Length 2:51
A this point in the movie, David is grown & in prayer with God & asking for forgiveness.
***During David’s moment of repentance and of recalling his past, he remembers his life as a boy: beginning with the prophet Samuel in the home of David’s father Jesse.
In this scene 1 Samuel 16 - Samuel anoints David to be the next king of Israel, in the home of his father, Jesse. Where we get our JESSE TREE prophecy, which is repeated in the Bible. (More of this movie soon — David will be discussed later!)

4:13 Paul Washer Sermon - Are You Saved?
To continually walk well with God - we need to continually REPENT of sins. REPENT means, confess them and turn away from them.
To hear from God, we need to OBEY Him, and stand humbly before His Holiness.
Historical Artwork: Samuel
The name Samuel means: asked of God, or God hears. It was his Mother, Hannah who asked God for a child, and God provided!
Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Temple, and he worked closely with Eli, the High Priest.
Samuel grew up during a sinful and chaotic time in Israel. The people of Israel wanted a King, so God chose someone. Samuel anointed the 1st King of Israel - Saul.
Samuel served the people as a priest, and as the last judge of Israel.
A PRIEST and a JUDGE ….and he was also a PROPHET.
A prophet speaks on behalf of God to the people.
The prophet, Samuel is the beginning of a long line of prophets in the Bible that speak of God’s revelations and warnings to the people of Israel.
God speaks to us today by the Holy Spirit!
He speaks through His Word - the Bible, through prayer, & circumstances. He is waiting to reveal Himself to you!
Are you hearing from God? God looks at your heart, it’s important to Him. If you’re not hearing from God, listen to Samuel and King David’s technique….
1 Samuel 22:8 But Samuel replied,
“What is more pleasing to the Lord:
your burnt offerings and sacrifices
or your obedience to his voice?
Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice,
and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.”
Samuel went on & anointed David to be King of Israel. The Bible tells us that David ‘was a man after God’s own heart’. In Psalm 51:17, David writes this:
“The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”
These cleaned out their hearts and lined them up with God’s Way. These men heard from God, and through Jesus - you can too!
